It seems this year’s Call Of Duty game is all but confirmed to be Black Ops 4 or Black Ops IIII if this logo on the baseball cap of an NBA player, James Harden, is accurate. See the video on NBA’s twitter page here where the player is wearing the baseball cap sporting the Black Ops IIII logo. Also see the image below which was leaked by an insider, Marcus Sellars according to both Eurogamer and Kotaku. Sellars also claims a version for the Nintendo Switch is also in development featuring full online mp, support for post-launch DLC, motion controls and HD rumble.
Using IIII instead of the proper Roman numeral for 4, IV, is peculiarly and could be quite interesting. I did a little digging and found out that the 1,111th Engineer Brigade is a huge branch of the US National Guard so could they maybe be featured in the game? If that is the reasoning behind the logo then it doesn’t really give us any hints as to the setting because the 1,111th was formed in World War 1 and has taken part in several major operations since in World War 2, Vietnam, both Gulf wars and the war in Afghanistan as well as more minor skirmishes and operations involving the US Army.
Here is the Wikipedia page for more information on the 1,111th Engineer Brigade and the many different units it consists of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/111th_Engineer_Brigade_(United_States)
If I were to place my bet, I’m going to say the new Call Of Duty is set in the modern day during some of the more recent conflicts. Maybe a more closer to home terrorist theme like the one in Modern Warfare 2 set in an American town that has been taken over. With last year’s game being World War 2 and fans speaking loud and clear that they don’t want any more futuristic settings after the negative response and poor sales o Infinite Warfare, I can see them going back to a more modern, present day setting next. although the first Black Ops featured several battles during the Cold War which included Vietnam so that is a possibility too that it could return to that time period for it’s setting.
Here is another logo I found although it’s not clear whether it is real or fan made but either way backs up the IIII logo on James Hardens baseball cap:
