Microsoft began rolling out game gifting to Xbox Preview members at the tail end of last year where users are able to buy games and gift them to someone else. Today that feature is out for everybody and they have also added Windows 10 PC. How it works is simple when you go on the Microsoft Store (They now call it this on both Xbox One and Windows 10 to avoid confusion) you can either select Buy or Buy As A Gift when you click on a game. You can then send a code to download that game to another person via Xbox Live messaging or an email address.
However, at the time of writing you cannot purchase Xbox 360 or Original Xbox games that are backwards compatible as a gift for someone else but I’d imagine that’s a small store update away from being added. You can’t play backwards compatible games on PC so I’d imagine that causes some complications with each version of the store and them being able to talk to each other. On Xbox One backwards compatible store seems to use some sort of legacy portal to the old Xbox 360 Marketplace to purchase games and I cannot purchase a game using my Microsoft Points only a credit or debit card. This too I imagine will be addressed in future UI updates.
It is also worth noting that if you own the game yourself already you will see this screen above where you can also still buy the game as a gift for a friend or family member. It is also worthy of note whilst talking about the Microsoft Store that if you have a game on either Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass and want to purchase that game outright rather than via either subscription service, in the case of Xbox Game Pass you also get a discount for being a member of that service. You can also buy an Xbox Game Pass subscription as a gift as well in either 1 month, 3 months or 6 months bundles for £7.99, £23.99 or £47.99 respectively.
