Covid-19 continues to decimate Europe, disrupt day to day life and force events to cancel. The Latest event to fall victim could indeed be Gamescom 2020.

Gamescom announced late last night that they will be undergoing an evaluation in mid-May to see whether or not it is feasible to hold Europe’s biggest Games Conference in August.

In mid-May, in view of the subsequent developments in the corona pandemic, an assessment should be carried out in cooperation with the responsible government agencies in which form gamescom can also take place on site in Cologne.

What ever fate is decided for Gamescom in May there will be some content available for Gamescom in a digital format. This will include expanding the Gamescom Opening Night Show and using the Gamescom Now digital platform.

“Millions of fans worldwide are looking forward to gamescom 2020. That’s why we are determined to celebrate news, announcements and world premieres together with the community this year at the end of August. In view of the Corona crisis, we are now expanding all digital formats at high pressure so that gamescom 2020 can at least take place digitally. With the global show gamescom: Opening Night Live or the portal gamescom now, we already reach millions of gamescom fans around the world. A further expansion of our digital strategy is now exactly the right way, ”says game managing director Felix Falk.

Gamescom 202 hasn’t been cancelled in its physical form just yet but with 71,818 confirmed cases of Covid -19 (at the time of writing) in Germany it is safe to say it is looking increasingly unlikely.

When we reevaluate the situation for all gamescom formats on the Cologne exhibition center in mid-May, the health of visitors has top priority. Of course, all preparations are still in full swing, both physically and digitally, ”says Oliver Frese, Managing Director of Koelnmesse GmbH.
