Ori & The Blind Forest remains one of my favourite games on the Xbox One.  Although it is also available on Steam for the PC, it is a console exclusive on the platform.  So it’s upcoming sequel Ori & The Will Of The Wisps, coming in Spring 2019, is one of my most anticipated games of next year.  Developers Moon Studios have just released the gameplay video below and the screenshots you can see throughout this article.  The game is about the titular Ori, a sprite with mystical powers, where in the first game he had to save his forest home from a dark essence that had drained the light from the world and turned all of the creatures within it evil and corrupt.

The game has a beautiful 2D art style with a breath-taking orchestral score that combined makes the world both haunting and arresting.  Gameplay is a mix of 2D platform in and Metroidvania style exploration where the world is open to explore but certain paths are inaccessible until you have the right abilities or items.  In a narrative sense the game is comparable with games like Limbo & Inside where very few words are actually spoken and the story is told through it’s environments and actions.

The sequel sees you playing again as Ori as he continues his journey and embarks on a new adventure to unravel the mysteries beyond the forest of Nibel, uncover hidden truths and discover his true destiny; according to the official press release for Ori & Tbe Will Of The Wisps.  Which sounds very ominous but I’m sure it will all make sense when the game comes out.  The first game had a similar descriptor but the story unfolded as I was playing it and it all starts to make sense as you learn the secrets of this fantastical world and although there is narration it is just enough to give you an idea of what’s happening then it is explained through action and the game’s environment.

Ori & The Will Of The Wisps launches in Spring 2019 & at the moment Xbox One is the only known plafform but I presume it will also come to Steam for PC owners like the original. If you’ve yet to play the excellent original game, Ori & The Blind Forest, I would highly recommend it.
